“If the Tree of Freedom is to be watered with the blood of patriots,
Then the blood of the Legionnaires will rain down upon this land,
And the forests we unleash from our hearts will crush these enemies of liberty
and make tyrants despair!”

                                                - Lt. Brock Stonebridge
                                                                      Rallying his remaining Legionnaires

                                                                                      during the War of Independence,
Right before the sky rained blood
& the enemies of liberty despaired.

History:

In the years leading up to the Wars of Independence, greater numbers of runaway slaves began collecting in the wild lands around Axes Bithtat. They were hunted ruthlessly across the four corners of Mazari by the Baronies and the Old Terranse. In spite of this, they slowly became organized into more effective fighting formations. The most effective of these was the self-styled "Legion of Freedom" lead by Marius Tyran. This runaway human slave from Eoport survived for years on the run from his slavers before finding save haven in the Colonial Hills. The stories of his flight are legendary and often exaggerated beyond credibility. However, what was fact was that Tyran was able to build a disciplined and powerful force in the four years leading up to the Wars. In the ensuing eight years of fighting, Tyran's Legionnaires were never defeated. Tyran was not only a genius tactically and logistically, but he was an inspirational leader and master instructor. His ability to train members of all races to form coherent and devastating battle formations was not exaggeration. Four years prior to Independence, his Legion soundly defeated an attacking forces five times its size with minimal casualities. The unshakable infantry in the centre was able to fix significant numbers of the enemy while a crushing assault took them in both flanks. The Victory of Nuvaro north of Ouro Preto on Heironea Umberfreeday that year is celebrated annually across the Federation by massive processions of drums and cymbals to symbolize the battle.

Tyran was able to mentor several equally effective officers among his Legions the most famous of whom is Brock Stonebridge. By the end of the Wars, Tyran commanded seven independent Legions from Table Lake to Cauldron.

Tyran developed a fast but effective means of training legionnaires as individual and collective fighters. Legionnaires are known for their rapid and sustained movement from battle to battle. In combat, their formations are relentless and unbreakable. Individual Legionnaires represent tough, professional and unshakable heavy infantry soldiers. As a formation, they are an irresistible juggernaut that can crush armies several times their size. When they halt after a day of marching, they form defensive camps that only the most foolish of opponents have ever attacked, and never successfully.

Centurion's Courage (Ex) Centurions are able to command an Aura of Courage as the Paladin class feature to other Legionnaires within the sound of his voice up to 60'. It is a free action that lasts for five rounds and can be done as often as desired.

Hold the Line (Ex) A Legionnaire does not falter. Legionnaires are immune to Charge Attacks and may add their Fortitude to Reflex saves against Trip attacks and Bull Rush attcks. So long as at least one of them is second level, four or more Legionnaires within adjacent spaces of one another are together immune to Trip and Bull Rush attacks. Activating this ability is a move equivalent action. Legionnaires caught flat footed cannot use this ability.

Improved Charge (Ex) A group of ten or more Legionnaires that have formed Phalanx of the Legion with a leader with this feat can Charge another formation. The formation needs 10' or more to charge and the action is initiated on a free-action voice command from the leader. This charge gains +4 to hit and initiates no attack of opportunity.

Improved Phalanx (Ex) Those directly surrounding (ie within 5' of) their senior centurions gain an additional +1 AC and +1 will.

Paen of the Legion (Su) As a result of years of exhortations and leadership experience, those that reach the rank of Pilus Prior are able to lead groups of Legionnaires in these awe-inspiring songs. Starting at 6th level, the Pilus Prior is able to initiate a battle paen. It is a full round action and can be maintained as long as he can sing and be heard. It becomes effective when at least ten other Legionnaires of any rank with 60' sing the song as a free action. It lasts as long as it continues to be sung and for five rounds thereafter. An affected ally receives +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and +1 to attack and weapon damage rolls.

Paen of Nuvaro (Su) Few survivors of any battle with a Legion will speak of their defeat except to mutter cryptically about the songs that haunt even their dreams. A Primus Pilus represents the highest rank a Legionnaire can reach as a result of career of stern discipline and painful experience. In his years of combat and leadership, he has learned to use his even voice as a weapon. As a full round action, he is able to initiate a battle paen that is heard 100' away. This dramatic song tells of the Victory of Nuvaro in epic detail. When at least twenty Legionnaires of any rank use a free round action to repeat it, all that can hear the Primus Pilus received +3 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and +3 to attack and weapon damage rolls. All opponents suffer -3 morale bonuses on Will saving throws. These effects last as long as heard and for five rounds thereafter.

Phalanx of the Legion (Ex) The legionnaire gains +1 to hit and AC when in formation with other legionnaires. There must be at least four legionnaires within 5 feet with this ability surrounding him to gain the effect. It does not stack.

Stonebridge's Defence (Ex) While legendary for his attacks, Lt Stonebridge was able to devise a simple set of earthen works around Legion formations to improve camp defences when halting at night. All under the command of a centurion that have had two hours to dig in and cut stakes form the Defence. They gain +1 AC and +1 Fortitude and Will saves while within 5' of the perimeter of the camp.

Tyran's Mules (Ex) While Legionnaires carry a large amount of equipment to support their mobility and camp construction, their rigorous training and camaraderie has made them comfortable with their loads. When travelling in groups of ten or more, the Legionnaire can carry up to his maximum strength in equipment as if it was a Medium Load. They also gain an additional +2 Constitution bonus on Forced March checks.
